What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy is known medically as photobiomodulation (PBM), previously called low-level laser therapy. It uses specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to penetrate the skin or tissue. Unlike UV light, red light therapy does not involve harmful radiation and does not damage the skin or increase skin cancer risk. The mechanism is believed to involve the mitochondria—the "powerhouses" of our cells. When red light is absorbed by the mitochondria, it may promote the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which supports cellular repair and regeneration while helping to reduce inflammation. Experts at Stanford Medicine note that photobiomodulation was officially recognized as a Medical Subject Heading by the U.S. National Library of Medicine in 2015, and research has grown significantly since then.
Key Applications Supported by Research
Skin Health and Anti-Aging
This is one of the most well-supported areas for red light therapy. Harvard Health notes that studies suggest red light therapy may help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone unevenness, enhance skin texture and firmness, and accelerate wound healing. The mechanism may involve stimulating collagen production—the structural protein that maintains skin strength and elasticity. A 12-week clinical study on red light masks showed that after consistent use, under-eye wrinkle and fine line size decreased by approximately 3% at 12 weeks, skin texture improved by nearly 23%, and about 77% of participants showed measurable improvement.
Hair Regrowth
Red light therapy also has relatively solid evidence in the hair restoration field. Experts at Stanford Medicine note that red light therapy promotes vasodilation, allowing more blood and nutrients to reach hair follicles, thereby supporting hair regrowth. Multiple studies indicate that for androgenetic alopecia (common male and female pattern hair loss), regular use of red light devices can increase hair density and thickness. It is important to note that results require consistent use over several months, and effects gradually diminish once use is stopped.
Pain Relief and Inflammation Management
Red light therapy also has a research foundation in pain management. UCLA Health notes that literature reviews have found photobiomodulation significantly improves chronic pain conditions including fibromyalgia, knee osteoarthritis, and non-specific lower back pain. MD Anderson Cancer Center has also explored its use for cancer treatment-related oral mucositis and pain management. However, Dr. Matthew Harb, an orthopedic specialist, points out that evidence in the knee osteoarthritis field is "mixed and controversial"—some trials show meaningful effects while others find no significant benefit, and mainstream treatment guidelines have not yet incorporated it as a recommendation. Near-infrared light (800–850 nm) penetrates deeper than visible red light and is more suitable for joints and deep tissue, but home devices may be weaker than clinical devices in penetration depth and dose control.
